Its curriculum is based on the interdisciplinary Great Books model offered in the Foundation Year Programme (FYP) at the University of King’s College.

Students receive 10 recorded lectures written and delivered by FYP and Dal professors which they can listen to at their convenience. Twice a month, all students who are available are invited to a live tutorial where they get to discuss the work with a university professor and with others in the class.

Each 10-session Halifax Thinks course focuses on one historical period. Our current session, The Middle Ages, features St. Augustine’s Confessions and Dante’s incredible poem The Divine Comedy, among other works. We hope to begin our next session, Halifax Thinks: Renaissance and Reformation, in Fall 2021.

This course is offered by donation. All proceeds go to support The Halifax Humanities Society’s other programs: Halifax Humanities 101 and the Angus Johnston Seminar. These programs offer non-credit education in the Humanities to adults living on low incomes, completely free of charge. Students in these programs receive free books, bus tickets, and a childcare subsidy if the need it. The proceeds from Halifax Thinks help to keep these programs running.

Joining us in this conversation may lead to the most liberating thoughts you’ve had in ages.
